Can humans colonise Mars?

“I would like to die on Mars…
Just not on impact”.

– Elon Musk

Mankind is going to Mars… at least that’s what a number of companies and government organisations would have us believe. But what is the reality of fulfilling this vision?

There are a number of stages in the journey to Mars. Each one has its’ challenges. RealityMars.com is a place for discussion about the real issues, costs and logistical challenges that will need to be overcome to send humans to Mars.

Getting to Mars

Everything that goes to Mars must be launched from earth. The cargo, the personnel, the fuel and life support, food, water etc.

A craft large enough and capable of sending humans to Mars would need to be constructed in space. So an orbital construction facility must also be built.

What is the reality of this being achieved?

Living On Mars

Mars is a very inhospitable place for humans. Early inhabitants will need to be protected from the environment 100% of the time.

The survival of these first settlers will depend on the resources they have brought from Earth and their ability to adapt.

Return from Mars

Is it possible to return samples or, more importantly, humans, from Mars?

To launch a vehicle into orbit on Mars requires about 38% of the power/effort required for the same load on Earth. And the size of the Martian atmosphere is less than on Earth so it will take less time to get into an orbit.

How might this be achieved? What are the challenges and how can they be overcome?
